Some of the projects I had, I interacted with a metals lab, very specific to the field I was in. In that environment the lab technicians were responsible for analyzing material samples I sent in. They had a wide range of latitude in that some managed the lab, maintained machines, kept up with new technologies and applied them, but their roles were rather routine in my mind and they specialized in the field of metallurgical analysis.
