This thesis presents a series of experiments on the evolutionary ecology of the reproduction, behaviour, chemical and molecular characteristics of bethylid wasps in the genus Goniozus. Part One investigates host quality by varying host age after paralysis. The quality of paralyzed hosts declines with time since paralysis negatively influences life history characteristics of Goniozus nephantidis.

The study finds that parental education is positively associated with child’s reported illness and its duration. Further verification of this outcome using an instrumental variable (2SLS) approach that assumes possible endogeneity of parental education supports the results relating to maternal education in both survey years. In contrast, paternal primary education tends to reduce children’s reported illness; but this is only statistically significant in GLSS 1.

Our approaches incorporated network, statistical and computational methods to identify where these regions of interest lie. Identified regions were investigated further to ascertain biological properties, such as an enriched presence of mutations, functionally relevant genes, regulatory elements, or all of the above. Whilst existing approaches tend to fixate on only these static properties, our studies also focused on the communication of otherwise remote regions by creating 3D interaction networks that describe the spatial proximities of genomic fragments.

Thanks to the Hubble Space Telescope, astronomers are using ancient stars in the Milky Way to come up with an independent estimate about the age of the Universe. In the past, astronomers have calculated this age using its rate of expansion, and pegged it between 13 14 billion years old. Under this new method, the astronomers targeted ancient white dwarf stars which cool down at a very predictable rate.
