(Hoang Nguyen/The Republican)Following a surge in coronavirus cases at the University of Massachusetts Amherst that led officials to tighten restrictions, Northampton public health officials urged businesses that employ UMass students to allow them to stay home until the school’s “self sequestration” order is over.In a message posted to Facebook on Thursday, Northampton Public Health Director Meredith O’Leary urged business owners to make sure workers who are students at UMass are not allowed to come to work until the school’s “quarantine/stay in place order has been lifted.” The aim is to protect the safety of employees and the community.Officials are seeking to reduce the risk of people being exposed to the virus in workplaces in Northampton and the community at large, according to O’Leary.
