The bypass would relieve Ashbourne’s town centre of its traffic woes (Image: Derby Telegraph / Ian Hodgkinson)A route has been selected for a 21 million bypass to ease traffic through a Derbyshire town often clogged with lorries. It is the latest development in the arduous saga of the Ashbourne bypass, which has been discussed for decades. The chosen route, one of three available at public consultation, runs west of the town for nearly 3km.It is not yet full steam ahead for the project, however, with the critical issues of funding and planning yet to be sourced and approved, which will likely take a number of years. The preferred western route would start from the A52 close to the town’s recycling tip and end near Callow Top Country park and the Landal Sandybrook Lodges.A new roundabout would be built at the start of the route, just a few hundred metres from the existing A52 roundabout. From its starting point, through an extensive array of agricultural fields, the bypass would travel north, curving around between the sewage treatment works and Bentley Brook before heading north east, with exits for Mapleton Road and the Tissington Trail. From these exits it would travel further north, through more fields, with an exit for Callow Top Country Park to the west. It would then continue further north and join with the A515 at Landal Sandybrook Lodges.Ashbourne bypass routes proposed by Derbyshire County Council. Halfway through the movie, we switched on the 2D to 3D conversion mode. The default 3D mode was on Cinema, which didn’t give much depth. Again, we changed the mode first to ‘Sports’ and later to ‘Extreme’. What’s more, director Phyllida Lloyd doesn’t seem to have made singing ability a criterion for casting the film, which is based on the long running stage hit of the same name. Streep has already proved to have a sweet singing voice in such films as “Postcards From the Edge” and “A Prairie Home Companion,” but her range seems ill suited for the lush, synthesized stylings of Abba; even worse, her primary leading man, Brosnan, comes forth with a dusty, adenoidal baritone completely at odds with the songs’ famously poppy brightness. Their four supporting players often look painfully at sea (sometimes literally, as “Mamma Mia!” relies on more than one sight gag of someone jumping, falling or belly flopping into the water).
