Community sport foundations (CSFs), like other non profit organizations, are increasingly employing social media such as Twitter to communicate their mission and activities to their diverse stakeholder groups. However, the way these CSFs utilize social media for communicating such practices remains unclear. Through a mixed method approach of content analysis of tweets from 22 CSFs established by English professional football clubs and interviews with key individuals within these CSFs (n = 7), this study examines the extent to which CSFs’ core activities are being communicated through Twitter and identifies the strategies employed for doing so.

At the turn of the last century, there were approximately 30,000 people living in the town. That figure rose to 44,000 in the 1920s, then gradually fell again to roughly the original figure after the closure of Palmer’s in the early 1930s.”There were pubs on the corners of most of Jarrrow’s old terraced streets.”The customers were chiefly working men but each pub would also have a ‘snug’ where a woman might go for a drink, and a ‘select room’ where a man might take his wife or girlfriend.”It would be fair to say the local boozer was one of the mainstays of everyday working class life on Tyneside.”There was one pub called the Forester’s Arms,” Paul reveals, “which would open at 5.30am and serve mulled rum to workers heading to the early shift at Palmer’s. It would warm them up.”The gradual closure of pubs in Jarrow was brought about by the ongoing decline of heavy industry and, in the 1970s and ’80s, by the growing preference for wine bars and discos and the move away from the dominoes and darts of the so called “old man’s pubs”.In March 1984, the opening of a new Metro station in the town allowed the younger townsfolk easy and speedy access to the nightlife of Newcastle and South Shields.The 2007 smoking ban in UK pubs was another blow to business and the current Covid 19 crisis has also taken its toll.”From once having 54 busy pubs, there are a mere handful left in Jarrow today,” says Paul.The 13 photographs in our gallery come from his large personal collection.
